Institutional members of the Polar Academy

We are proud to announce that the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the University of Bergen (UiB) and the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) have joined the Norwegian Scientific Academy for Polar Research as institutional members.

  • By joining our academy as institutional members, these organizations offer their support to achieve the overall goals of the academy, which is to:
  • Promote research and education in polar areas.
  • Stimulate national and international cooperation and interdisciplinary polar research.
  • Contribute to the communication of the knowledge of Polar Regions and the people who live there to national and international governing bodies, industry and the public.
  • Contribute to the understanding of environmental and climate change and human activities that affect and are affected by these.
  • Promote sustainable development on Svalbard and in northern regions.
  • Contribute to the development of expertise at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) and the polar scientific community in general.

Institutional members agree also to support the work of the academy through annual contributions. The polar academy is a non-profit foundation.

We extend our warm appreciation to the rector of NTNU, Torbjørn Digernes (top picture), the rector of UiB, Sigmund Grønmo, and the director of NERSC, Stein Sandven (bottom), as heads of their organizations.

Proposing new members

All members of the Polar Academy are hereby encouraged to propose new members. A new member should be an international scientist who has done independent scientific work in polar research or an individual who has strongly contributed to the advancement of polar research in other ways. The membership of the academy shall reflect the breadth of discipline areas within polar research.

Proposals for 2011 should be forwarded to the general secretary. The proposals will be handled by a Member Nomination Committee, appointed by the General Assembly, who will make its recommendations to the academy board. Please include a written recommendation and a CV with the proposal.
